Bureau Veritas Industry - In-service Verification of Lifting EquipmentThe Service proposed by Bureau Veritas Industry supports a need of its clients to assess the compliance status of lifting equipment or accessories in respect of certain standards and regulations or to the Client own specifications (the “technical referential”) which must be specified in the contract.

Deaths and injuries in the workplace are still a continuing problem in every industrialized nation. To ensure safer conditions for workers who are in contact with high risk equipment demands strict controls. Installations need to be checked regularly. Indeed, it is the only way to ensure that installations comply with regulations, thus minimizing risk.



Bureau Veritas Industry - In-service Verification of Lifting EquipmentThis Service is intended for the owners or users of lifting equipment and accessories (the “Client”).

All inspections & testing are done in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, act 85 of 1993: Driven Machinery Regulation (DMR18). Lifting equipment may be:
Pedestral cranes, Fork lifts, Power operated winches & hoists, Lever hoists / pull lifts chain block, Derrick masts, Lorry loaders, Mobile elevating work platforms, Overhead travelling cranes, Runway beams, Tirfor machine, Travelling trolleys, Floor crane, Mobile cranes, Tower crane, Jib cranes.

Lifting accessories may be:
Beam clamps, Chain slings, Containers, baskets, gas racks & waste, Eye bolt & rigging screw, rings, Hooks, Wire rope slings, Shackles, Man baskets, Polyester slings, Pad eyes, Single 1 multi sheave block, Plate clamp, Cargo nets, Lifting / spreader beams.



  1. Each type of lifting equipment will be inspected and tested by a competent person in according to the relevant procedures and standards for that specific type of equipment.
  2. Each type of equipment has a unique inspection and test report that is drawn up from specific standards relevant to that type of equipment.
  3. In these reports all the technical specifications and parameters are set out and given to explain to the user why the equipment failed or are still in good order.



Different types of inspections may be proposed by Bureau Veritas Industry during the life of the lifting equipment:

  • Initial Verification of compliance to the requirements of the technical referential (before putting into service or reputing into service): this Service is provided before commissioning, after any change of site, configuration or conditions of use, after structural modification, or after addition of a new part of the lifting equipment.
  • Periodical In-service inspections to discuss the maintenance of the compliance status: this Service is provided with a periodicity defined in the applicable contract.

The content of Initial Verification includes: (Note: We perform inspections and testing on equipment in use, should something be built it must have been approved and we can only verify it against a known standard).

For lifting equipment:

  • the verification that a report of adequacy to site conditions exists, and that its content has been taken into account;
  • the examination of the assembly (when applicable);
  • the examination of the condition of all parts and;
  • the witnessing of static and dynamic proof load tests or to operating tests: the lifting equipment must go through the tests without any failing.

For a lifting accessory:

  • the verification that a report of adequacy to site conditions exists, and that its content has been taken into account - the verification will be done in accordance to the applicable Regulations and standards.
  • the examination of the state of all parts
  • performance test will be in accordance with the regulation and Standards.
  • assistance to static load test: the accessory must go through the test without any failing.

The content of Periodical In-service inspection includes:
For lifting equipment:

  • the examination of the state of all parts which will be done in accordance to the Regulation and applicable standards
  • the witnessing of operating tests

For a lifting accessory:

  • the examination of the condition of all parts.

  • Scheduling of the visit
  • On-site inspection
  • Compilation & submission of report
  • Follow-up of findings



Subject to an express agreement by the parties, the inspection of lifting equipment or accessory may be supplemented, when appropriate, by other services such as:

  • Verification of solving of gaps identified in the Report;
  • Verification of the examination of adequacy of the lifting equipment or accessory to site conditions;
  • Type-approval and verification of conformity of the lifting equipment or accessory during manufacture.
